The Concept
North Philadelphia Urban Leadership for Sustainability & Entrepreneurship (NPULSE) is an economic development strategy to provide access to urban agriculture technologies for food insecure communities in zip codes 19121 and 19122. NPULSE is also an on-ramp to related industries including energy, water, waste management and health. Our Communities as a Service™ methodologies and platform will help drive inclusive economic prosperity.
Our Purpose
Stimulate business and job creation and inspire career pathways into STEM related disciplines that support sustainability. Provide on-ramps into urban agriculture across generations. We expect to start 3-5 business and teach 200 residents how to approach 21st century agriculture.
The Inspiration
George Washington Carver and Star Trek, of course. The greatest American agriculturalist, Black farming advocate and biomaterials product developer of the 20th century AND Star Trek’s iconic “Project Genesis” trilogy used biotechnology (STEM) to renew, revitalize and restore life. NPULSE is an evolving approach to culturally responsive economic development.
Growing people, plants and prosperity
Pennsylvania’s agriculture industry is powerful, robust and committed to demystifying, decentralizing and democratizing access to ag-tech to bring food security closer to home (EConsult, 2021). NPULSE is designed to build the capacity of people in 19121 and 19122 to define, participate and financially benefit from urban agriculture.
